Chapter Two

Iza woke to the sound of Kade going through her pack, and she rolled onto her side to watch her pull out her chain mail, which she laid next to her sword sheathed in its scabbard. Kade turned to see green eyes watching her.

“I’m sorry to have wakened you. I was trying to be quiet.”

“It’s time for me to get up anyhow.”

“Caroline brought in a pitcher of cool water if you would like to wash your face, and I will tell her we are ready for breakfast.”

“That would be fine,” she said as Kade left the room.

When she joined them in the dining room, Kade and Caroline were discussing a list of food supplies. When Caroline saw her walk in she stood, “I will start breakfast now,” and scurried into the kitchen.

Iza sat across from Kade and poured a cup of strong, steaming coffee. She watched Kade peruse the list and when she looked up Kade caught her staring.

“After we eat, we shall go see Henry and get the rest of our supplies. Caroline will get our food together while we are gone, so hopefully we can start on our way before the morning passes.”

“I have my pack ready, and have plenty of room for extra supplies.”

“Good. We will have to share the load.”

Caroline returned with heaped plates of cured ham, fried potatoes, onions, and fried eggs. “I have fresh milk or water, whichever you prefer.”

“Milk for me, please,” Kade, said.

“Me too,” Iza added.

Caroline sat with them as they ate, and then walked from the house to point out Henry’s shop for them. “Good luck with your bartering.”

Iza followed Kade, who carried the sword and chain mail. When they reached Henry’s shop the door was propped open so they dusted the mud from their boots and entered the room.

“Good morning, ladies. Caroline told me that you have items for trade.”

“Yes, I see the news travels fast,” Kade said.

Henry approached them cautiously. He winced noticeably at Kade’s scarred face, and the mask she wore. It was obvious to Iza that her size and appearance intimidated the slight man.

“We are in need of heavier clothing and boots for travel, as well as warmer packs for sleeping.”

“Why don’t you take a look at the boots and clothing while I examine your trade goods,” Henry said, anxious to get his hands on her weaponry.

Kade fixed her steely eyes on him making him nervous, then slowly handed over the sword and chain mail. “You won’t find items crafted like these in this region. I know well what they are worth, so don’t waste my time.”

Henry nodded his head as he took the items she offered, and then she followed Iza to the clothing area of the shop.

Kade picked out a pair of warm boots, and found a smaller pair for Iza, who was looking at new socks. “Here, try these on for fit,” she handed her the boots.

They would also need hats to ward off the rain and snow, and oilskin coats to repel the weather.
